Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement - Rear (Except 35 Series)

Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement - Rear (Except 35 Series)

Removal Procedure

1. Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
2. If the brake fluid level is midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, no brake fluid needs to be removed from the reservoir before proceeding.
3. If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
6. Inspect the caliper operation.
7. Using a C-clamp, compress the brake caliper pistons. Both pistons (if applicable) must be compressed equally.
8. Remove the brake caliper mounting bolts.
9. Remove the brake caliper from the bracket.
10. Suspend the caliper from the frame with heavy gauge wire. Do not allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose.
11. Remove the brake caliper bracket mounting bolts.

12. Remove the brake pads from the mounting bracket.
13. Remove the anti-raffle clips from the mounting bracket.
14. Inspect the caliper and bracket.

Installation Procedure

1. Install the anti-rattle clips to the bracket.
2. Install the brake pads to the bracket.
3. Perform the following procedure before installing the caliper bracket mounting bolts::
^ Remove all traces of the original adhesive patch.
^ Clean the threads of the bolt with brake parts cleaner or the equivalent and allow to dry.
^ Apply Threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 or Red LOCTITE TM #272 to the threads of the bolt.
4. Install the caliper bracket.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

5. Install the caliper bracket mounting bolts.
^ For vehicles equipped with JC5/JH5 brake systems, tighten the caliper bracket mounting bolts to 200 Nm (148 lb ft).
^ For vehicles equipped with JH6 brake systems, tighten the caliper bracket mounting bolts to 165 Nm (122 lb ft).
6. Tighten the brake caliper mounting bolts.
^ For vehicles equipped with JC5/JH5 brake systems, tighten the brake caliper mounting bolts to 42 Nm (31 lb ft).
^ For vehicles equipped with JH6 brake systems, tighten the brake caliper mounting bolts to 108 Nm (80 lb ft).
7. If the rubber boot appears to contain trapped air, gently lift the boot edge against the caliper housing to relieve the air pressure.
8. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
9. Remove the safety stands.
10. Lower the vehicle.
11. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of it's travel distance.
12. Slowly release the brake pedal.
13. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 11-12 until a firm pedal is obtained. This will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
14. Fill the master cylinder reservoir to the proper level with clean brake fluid.
